During the depression I ate sunflower seeds,
but in the fifties I lost my appetite altogether.

I didn't own a car with wings, I didn't
lose myself in the rock 'n' roll of new music.

In the fifties I leaned over a bare, cold banquet table
borrowed by the court, and learned to defend myself.
