2. What are the Richards Criteria?Fortunately seminal critic Ellen Richards established the authorized version of “Hypertext” before the untimely deaths of the author and all the major critics (FAQ #4, FAQ #5, FAQ #6). According to the Richards Criteria, the 69 canonical words comprise all possible hidden words in hypertext except for British spellings (tyre); out-of-fashion slang (prexy for president); archaisms and obscurities (ere, ye, ret, rete); and a few abbreviations (PE, PT, TX,and HRT, i.e. Hormone Replacement Therapy). The Richards Criteria further assert that the poem uses each word only once; no plurals or other modifications are allowed; and the initial letters of each line unscramble to spell hypertext (allowing Ex = x). Finally, according to Richards, the exact-anagram pseudonyms that pop up in the fan fiction (“Rhett Epyx,” “Hetty P. Rex,” “H. Tex Typer”) are apocryphal. |
